LONDON, ROTTERDAM: 12 October 2022 - Itero Technologies (Itero) have been awarded a €‎240k (~£210k) grant from the Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland (RVO), the Netherlands Enterprise Agency. The funds will be applied towards the demonstration plant of Itero’s recycling process that can manage plastic waste streams otherwise destined for landfill or incineration, due to the diversity of plastics and high levels of contamination.

The Topsector Energie (TSE) Industrie Study grant, facilitated by the RVO, will support the development of the demonstration plant at the Brightlands Chemelot Campus, in Sittard-Geleen, Netherlands. The plant will use a modular pyrolysis process to convert contaminated mixed plastic waste into virgin-grade chemical building blocks. These products can be used to create new high quality plastics, therefore closing the loop on hard-to-recycle plastic waste streams. This project will further deepen Itero’s knowledge of the waste landscape in the Benelux region, and help identify opportunities to optimise the equipment and process related to waste handling. Through research and development, Itero aims to limit energy consumption, waste output and contaminants, therefore minimising the environmental impact of the demonstration plant.

Head of Product and Partnerships, Abi Mountain, says: “This grant is further recognition of the potential for our technology to deliver an environmental upside for hard-to-recycle plastic waste. Supportive environments like the Netherlands enable the research and development that new technologies, such as ours, need to make them as sustainable and circular as possible. We look forward to continually improving our process with the support of the RVO Nederland.”
