We’re a member! Itero signs up to The UK Plastics Pact

The UK Plastics Pact is a unique initiative "creating a circular economy for plastics, capturing their value by keeping them in the economy and out of the natural environment”.

The UK Plastics Pact is a leading initiative tackling plastic waste. This initiative is unique in its approach by facilitating collaboration across the entire plastics value chain alongside UK governments and NGOs. The UK Plastics Pact is delivered by WRAP and enabled by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation's New Plastics Economy initiative.

Plastic is a valuable commodity with unique properties. It plays a huge role in the UK economy, but its current life cycle has disproportionately negative consequences for the natural world and is resource-inefficient. The system surrounding plastics is long overdue for real change.

With The UK Plastics Pact, those involved in producing, selling, collecting and reprocessing plastic can work hand-in-hand with governments, local authorities, and NGOs. Together, we can collaborate on changing how plastics are valued by keeping them in the economy and out of the natural environment.

“A world where plastic is valued and doesn't pollute the environment”

THE UK PLASTICS PACT VISION

The UK Plastics Pact has defined four targets to achieve by 2025:

  1. Eliminate problematic or unnecessary single-use packaging through redesign, innovation or alternative (reuse) delivery model.

  2. 100% of plastics packaging to be reusable, recyclable or compostable.

  3. 70% of plastics packaging effectively recycled or composted.

  4. 30% average recycled content across all plastic packaging.

Our CEO, Simon Hansford, believes in these goals and their importance for Itero in the short- and long-term: “Itero is committed to these targets; they are at the core of what we do. We are developing, improving and iterating processes that allow for greater recyclability across plastics that would otherwise not be recyclable through traditional mechanical methods. In this approach, we complement and don’t compete with mechanical processing – increasing the proportion of end-of-life plastics which are recycled.

As part of the pact, Itero also participates in the ongoing collaboration and work of The UK Plastics Pact through roundtable discussions and facilitated conversation. We understand the systemic nature of the plastics industry and support work both within and beyond The UK Plastics Pact to create a circular plastics future across government, industry, brands, academia, and consumers.
